Tenchi Muyo Wiki

D is one of the main characters in Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure. D is a humanoid alien and one of the Core Robot pilots for the Earth Defense Force. In Tenchi Muyo! GXP she becomes a cabbit humanoid hybrid and can control Kamidake II.

Early Biography

D and her original colony came to Earth thousands of years ago. They took the original Core Robot, Zinv, and fled their world to escape Kumu, a malevolent alien presence, and the robot Himiko, which claimed the lives of her friends.

The GXP novels and supplementary Doujinshi offer slightly different explanations, revealing that the anime's version of events are a more simplified version than what was originally planned. In the expanded version, Kumu were not pursuers, they were simply a second core robot and its seed. The colony crashed on Earth. In one version of the story, Zinv was originally their starship, rebuilt into a robot form, as they felt it would act as an object of worship for the primitive society, an idol. The version in current continuity suggests it was always a mecha, one of many strewn across the galaxy.

In all versions, eventually the colony fractured and fought each other. D's group wanted to steer the group into one that returned to nature and gave up on reliance on technology, and Himeko's wanted to expand on their technology, possibly returning to space. In the war, D's body was badly damaged and had to be put into a bioroid body. When her group warred against technology, she became afraid because her body was dependent on technology. She stole Zinv and tried to meet with the other group to negotiate peace. It was too late and the groups destroyed each other, with D as the only survivor. She gathered their ships, Zinv, and Himeko and went into suspended animation until found again.

Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure

D was found at the same time as the mysterious alien artifact in the parallel world. Her original bioroid body had degraded but the EDF scientists were able to use the advanced technology in the ship to create new ones. Efforts to attach her astral self into the artificial body proved troublesome, with the three earliest bodies degrading quickly depending on where the astral was placed. It was her 4th body, the "D" model, that survived when the astral was put in place of her left eye.

Dee Sanada

Dee Sanada

D appears to be as inhuman as the robot she pilots, speaking mechanically and asking many questions about human emotions and behavior due to the fact that her astral self simply possesses a bioroid body. The only one to break through her stony exterior is Kazuki Yotsuga, to the shock of Commander Ken Sanada

She develops a strong attachment to Kazuki, culminating in her decision to return to her real body at the climax of the series in order to save him. D frequently had visions of a horrible creature attacking, and was deathly afraid of Himiko. As a robot pilot, D is subpar, often requiring rescue by Kazuki or Mitsuki. However, she redeems herself after she returns to her real body by removing the limiter placed upon Zinv, allowing its true power to manifest itself with Kazuki as its pilot. When Zinv is destroyed and the two parallel worlds merge, D becomes Dee Sanada, a seemingly normal girl and the adopted daughter of Ken Sanada and Akane Yamano.

OVA 5-2 D Cabbit

D in Tenchi Muyo! OVA 5

In the Tenchi Muyo! GXP novels, it is revealed that the events of Dual occurred approximately a billion years before Tenchi Masaki and the rest were born. In the future, Kazuki, D, and the rest were known as the beginning of "The Great Prehistoric Civilization" that seeded the galaxy and were a source of much of the future's oldest technology. Much like in Dual, D survives her previous civilization as an astral sleeping in the hidden Zinv. During the events of Seina Yamada rescuing Fuku and the Kamidake from Tarant Shank's hidden base Seina revives her and Zinv. Along with Miki Steinbeck and Kirche, D's astral is transferred into a clone of Fuku by Doctor Clay.

Tarant's scientists were not able to replicate Fuku's abilities in the clones but Washu was able to bio-enhance D and the others so they could all transform into their humanoid forms and also have close to the same abilities as Fuku, becoming able to control the Kamidake II just as Fuku can, although Fuku always has priority.

D comments that Seina is very similar to Kazuki and joins his team, eventually becoming one of his wives (as do the other cabbit girls). In fact, Seina is the reincarnation of Kazuki.

Trivia

  • D was not her name when she first went into stasis. D refers to her android body being its fourth iteration. When she realized people were calling her D she found she liked it. Her original name has never been revealed.
  • D bears a striking resemblance to Tenchi Muyo! GXP character Neju Na Melmas, leading some to believe that she and D may belong to the same race or that they are parallel counterparts to each other.
  • D also resembles Doll from the Tenchi Muyo! spin-off, Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar, which takes place in another parallel reality to the main canon Tenchi Muyo universe.
  • D is also very similar to the Neon Genesis Evangelion series character Rei Ayanami.
  • D's favorite food is Curry.
  • In Tenchi Muyo! OVA 5, the other girls in her group are voiced by the voice actors of their counterparts in Dual! Ai Uchikawa, however, seems to have had retired from voice acting and D did not speak in the series, but she returns to reprise the roll in Tenchi Muyo! GXP Paradise Starting.
  • It is not known why the future version of D is more of an emulation of the early emotionless D than the bright and cheery Dee Sanada, even unnecessarily copying the glowing astral eye appearance. Masaki Kajishima has said there is a reason but has not revealed it yet.
