Tenchi Muyo Wiki

Daimon is a storyteller and Washu's partner. He works undercover at Sasami's school as a janitor, but his real mission is to find magical girls—like the main characters Sasami, Misao, Makoto, Anri, and Tsukasa—and train them on behalf of the witches of the magical world. However, eventually they rebeled against the witches themselves.

Though Daimon is Washu's boss[1] as a Storyteller, he often follows her lead. Daimon is also Itoki's main love interest.

Biography

Daimon, like Ginji Iwakura, was born in the magical world as a "Storyteller," meaning he didn't inherit any magical powers and is essentially a regular human. His ancestors were among the humans who chose to leave the human realm for the magical dimension known as the "World of Witches."

Much of Daimon's life in the World of Witches is unknown, but during his time there, he met Ginji Iwakura, a fellow storyteller, and Itoki, a powerful witch who fell in love with him. He was also at least aware of some of the witches, like the Chief Sorceress, even if only by reputation. During his adulthood, he eventually met Washu, a fellow powerless human who, unlike him, was born in the magical world[2].

Daimon and Washu were given a secret mission by the witches: to find girls born in the magical world and train them in secret so they could hide their powers and integrate into the human world as soon as possible. Given Washu's education in the human world, she was able to secure a job as a teacher in a middle school; Daimon's cover was more humble, working as a middle school janitor[3].

During his undercover assignment, Daimon befriended both Sasami and Misao over their shared interest in Ginji's fantasy books[3]. He was aware of Ginji's and, by extension, Sasami's true magical origins but didn't confirm Sasami's powers until Washu secretly tested her.

Daimon also seemed to be one of the few people the shy Misao befriended in the human realm. Despite their polar opposite personalities, he claimed that Sasami and Misao "had a lot in common," likely referring to their shared magic or an "opposites attract" dynamic[3].

Once the magical girls' club formed, under the guise of it being a "Cooking Club," Daimon became one of the girls' mentors. He also helped Washu with other tasks, such as informing the girls' parents about magic. Despite his seniority and rank, he often acted as her sidekick.

Later, the witches changed their mission, instructing Daimon and Washu to train the girls to better use their powers. Eventually, once the witches' malicious true intentions were discovered, Daimon and Washu openly rebelled against them to protect both the girls and the world.

Daimon became a key player in defeating the witches, thanks to Itoki's love for him. Although Itoki remained loyal to the Chief Sorceress, she helped Washu and Daimon throughout the series by using her privileged position to bend the rules in their favor, providing hints about the witches' true plans, and even allowing them to escape when she could have easily captured them.

Itoki eventually rebelled against her kind, stating that she was only truly loyal to Daimon[4], and in the process Sasami's friends gained a very powerful and inavluable ally to save the world.

Personality

Daimon serves as a foil to the more explosive and hot-blooded Washu. He is shown to be relaxed and laid-back, slow to anger, and often fades into the background compared to her.

Notably, unlike the witches, Daimon always taught the girls never to use their powers for violence or to harm others. While this pacifist stance left the five girls of the club notoriously outmatched compared to those trained by the witches, it also showed Daimon's commitment to nonviolence. However, his pacifism had its limits; for example, he asked Itoki to seal Keura but was stopped by Sasami.

Daimon is brave, kindhearted, and empathetic. He also has a sense of humor and enjoys teasing Washu from time to time.

Etymology

"Daimon" means demon[5][6]. This name might be ironic, given that Daimon never shows any malicious or evil intent, or it could be symbolic, reflecting his origin from a higher dimension and his rebellion against powerful beings.

Trivia

  • Daimon is Washu's senior as a Storyteller, as she joined relatively recently, not long before the events of the first episode, and her boss[1]. However, Washu seems to be the de facto leader, with both the magical girls of the Cooking Club and Daimon following her lead.
  • Given that both Ginji Iwakura and Daimon were born in the magical realm, it's unlikely they had formal college educations like Washu, which might explain why they settled for jobs that required none, such as Ginji being a book author and Daimon being a janitor.
  • It's unknown if Daimon reciprocates Itoki's romantic feelings. He seems aware of them and has never outright rejected her, but he has never acted romantically toward her either.
  • Personality wise, he is the most similar to Tenchi Masaki, of the main tenchi cast, in the sense that theyre both introverted men, that are friendly and kind with others, and are content with doing humble manual labor, and yet somehow have women madly in love after them. But in Daimon's case, it's just Itoki given Washu hasn't expressed any romantic feelings towars him so far.
  • It's likely that Itoki is so lovestruck that she sees qualities in Daimon that he doesn't actually possess. For instance, she says that his intelligence[7] is one of the reasons she loves him, but Daimon has never shown anything beyond above-average intelligence.
  • Despite his humble position, Daimon does have positive qualities, such as being kindhearted. The dichotomy of a powerful witch falling in love with a humble, powerless janitor was likely an intentional irony.
