Lan

Lan

Lan is a member of a group of bandits under the command of Cordyline, her mother. After Cordyline's apparent death, Lan assumes the leadership of the group.

Background

Lan's childhood was difficult thanks to Cordyline being unable to keep work and also irresponsible with money. Lan often had to be the responsible one, making money by herself for her own needs. While Cordyline eventually become a much more successful bandit leader, Lan resented her for the rough upbringing and when she grew older she limited herself to what money she could claim as her own, not touching her mother's money.[1]

Ceres Tyte contracts Cordyline, Lan and their group of Rōnin Seikishi to help him run away from the Holy Land with his Girlfriend. Instead, they decide to capture Ceres and either ransom his return or force his servitude as a rare male Seikishi. However, they also discover that Dagmeyr Mest is traveling on the same vessel and decide to also kidnap him for the same purposes. However, Dagmeyr convinces Cordyline to help him with his father's invasion of the Holy Land. He then smuggles Lan and the other bandits into the Holy Land on his ship.[2] Lan is part of a group that disguises themselves as servants and intermingle with the students. Her greed gets the best of her and she picks the pockets of the rich girls, and presumably steals from their rooms while working. Kenshi actually catches her, but he doesn't tell anyone and simply asks her not to do it anymore.

She is often shown to be in conflict with Dagmeyr's right-hand, Emera, who constantly warns Lan that her reckless actions are endangering their plans.[3]

After the Holy Land is retaken and her bandits are defeated, she is seen turning on Dagmeyr, intending to at least use him as the ransom subject he was initially meant to be. However, Emera sees her stalking him and it is implied that she attacks and likely kills her.[4]

Personality

Inspired by a need to make her own money from a young age, Lan is very greedy and opportunistic and steals as much treasure and valuables from anyone, whenever she can. Even if it endangers the bigger plan.

She did not care that much when she heard about Cordyline's death, saying only that she messed up.[5]

Sarcastic and rebellious, Lan takes her job seriously but tends to be overconfident. Although she is constantly critical of others, none of the plans that she leads are shown to be successful.
