Mihoshi and Kiyone working together at the "CD Vision" music store.
In the Pretty Sammy OVA Mihoshi Mizutani (水谷 美星 Mzutani Mihoshi?) (as she is known in both series; she was given the last name of her Japanese seiyu, Yuko Mizutani) works at Chihiro Kawai's (Sasami and Tenchi's mother) CD Vision music store with Kiyone Yuri. She is enrolled in college.
In her official bio, she is described as having “the ultimate mixture of ethnic backgrounds”. Her grandfather is American, her grandmother is Thai, her father is Japanese, and her mother is described as “Mixed”[1] While this isn’t noticeable in the English dub, it’s stated that her “Okayama” accent surfaces whenever she gets angry.[1]
Similarly, In the Pretty Sammy Novel universe, it's stated she has mixed ascendancy from "many different countries" therefore she isn't fully japanese like most other returning Tenchi characters[2]
Television versions
In Magical Project S (Pretty Sammy TV), as well as in Sasami: Magical Girls Club, Mihoshi is Sasami and Misao's teacher. Despite her usual clumsiness she is still portrayed as fairly competent at her job in both versions.
Magical Project S (Pretty Sammy TV)
Mihoshi teaches her students in front of a chalk blackboard.
In the Pretty Sammy TV series, she is portrayed as a very laid-back and cheerful teacher that nonetheless does educate her students competently. She also likes to encourage them, cheer for them[3], and is friendly with them. For instance she had her class congratulate Misao Amano and Kenji's perfect score in a math test, and had her students talk about their dreams in class[4]. And she didn't berate lower achieving students, like Sasami Kawai. In fact she often did activities with her students outside her school duties, such as going to the beach[5], or teaming with them to help Kiyone get a boyfriend[6].
In contrast to Mihoshi's " fun teacher" approach, Kiyone Amayuri, who is also a fourth grade homeroom teacher in the same school, but for different students, is portrayed as being very strict, and proud of her high achieving students. All of Kiyone's students are portrayed as being nerdy, which further implies Kiyone's teaching methods are more strict than Mihoshi's[3].
Kiyone, and her class, felt a strong rivalry with Mihoshi's students, even competing dodgeball for the right to play in the school's playground. This was one sided, however, as Mihoshi just saw Kiyone as her friend. She met Kiyone when both were junior highschool students in the same school[3].
Sasami: Magical Girls Club
Mihoshi, as she appears in Sasami: Magical Girls Club
In Sasami: Magical Girls Club, her role is very limited to short cameos, and gags with her role being more of a recurring extra to the point she never directly interacted with Sasami in the whole show's run. In fact Washu was the only returning main Tenchi character that often interacted with the main girls and was directly involved with the main plot.
Mihoshi was last seen speaking with Misao’s mother, welcoming her to her class after her, daughter, Misao Shinohara's long absence in the world of witches[7]. It's unknown, but also unlikely that she is aware of magic, or if Misao's mother explained the true cause of Misao's absence. Nonetheless, she gladly welcomed Misao to re-join her class without any issue.
Trivia
- Unlike the other animated versions of Pretty Sammy, there are no signs of a version of Kiyone, or Noike, existing in the Sasami: magical girls club universe, let alone either of them being a teacher like Mihoshi. Therefore this is one of the few versions were she is not paired with either of her usual foils.
- In all three of these animated adaptions, Mihoshi is still her usual airhead self with the added change that she is a regular human. So far, the Pretty Sammy "Magical night 2" audio play is the only Pretty Sammy adjacent continuity were she is portrayed as being from another planet.
- Ironically, despite her usual absent mindness, Mihoshi is still portrayed as being somewhat book smart. In the continuities she is a homeroom teacher, she is competent enough to teach math at a middle school level[4]. While in those based in the OVAs she was smart enough to be accepted in college while Kiyone was not. Kiyone, however, claims it was Mihoshi's fault.[8]
- Had Sasami:14, the canceled sequel to Magical Project S, been made, she, and Kiyone Amayuri, would've retuned, now as junior Highschool teachers instead of merely middle school teachers. Their roles would've been similar to the original series, seemingly, following both Sasami and Misao now that the magical girl duo was slightly older.
