Novels
After the conclusion of the Tenchi Muyo! GXP anime directed by Shinichi Watanabe, Masaki Kajishima began writing a series of Tenchi Muyo! GXP light novels starting in 2003. These novels are in a different continuity from the anime and have effectively replaced the anime as the official version of the story.
While the GXP novels begin as an adaptation of the anime, they introduce significant differences in the story, including going into greater detail with the settings and characters as well as introducing entirely new characters and plotlines. The changes become particularly prevalent after the novels go beyond the point where the GXP anime ended. The Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA seasons that followed the GXP anime follow the expanded plot of the novels, featuring many characters and aspects not featured in the anime.
There are currently eightteen light novels, with the latest one being released in 2025.
